I have a 2165cc engine with 44idf's.
After some recent tuning, It was driving perfectly! (famous last words!)
A few miles from my house it suddenly started popping and misfiring around 2000 revs, it ran fine when over this.
I first guessed it may be electrical, as I had a similar problem on an older beetle. I check all the volts. that was fine.
I checked the HT leads, timing. they were fine.
I checked the spark plugs, they were a bit sooty, due to recent tuning I guessed, so I changed them and checked the valves which were fine.
The car was fine whilst parked and running, i checked the fuel/air mixture, all well and checked the exhaust and manifold nuts, for tightness.
Took it out for a spin, the problem persisted. put some fresh fuel in the car too.
So took the carbs off, cleaned, and blew through everything. The only thing I found was that the seat for one of the seats for one of the fuel. mixture screws came out with the screw...Bingo I thought!!!
So I reseated it.. put it all back together. and took it out to test.
It purred and was running great until about half a mile away. the popping and misfiring started again. I drove it it a further 3-400 yards, turned, and to return home.
Then it started running perfectly again. I drove a further 10 miles all fine...
I presume carbs as the problem was where the carbs idle jets were working and the engine ran fine when the main jets were working?
so thought it may be a bit of dirt I missed?
Or the dizzy, it's a pertronixs billet, perhaps the advance mechanism was sticking? Or an HT lead that has broken down? I have some spare leads, and can borrow another dizzy. But its not worth changing until the problem starts again?
Does anyone have a clue what might have caused it? Thanks!
