Without proper tools, it is not an easy diy job. If you can release the axle tube you can hit it from behind the shock absorber mount to push the bearing off the shaft enough to get a couple of screwdrivers between the bearing & the housing to lever it off).

 

Is it possible that your '71 has IRS, with CV joints and 2 bearings per side?
