who else purchased one of these? has anyone checked the price of a replacement/spare belt? -£21+ p&p- 'kin 'ell!!!
before some administrator decides this should be in 'chat' now it becomes technical-
i have done a bit of research, with the help of a local car spares shop, the closest size match i can find is:
5PK933
its a little longer than the original but is the best easily available and half the price of purchasing it from our kind 'vw specialists'. you have a vw, its aircooled, you need a spare fanbelt! run it without it wont be just the battery thats gonna be dead! :)

thats kind of like technical karma for falling for the advertising that made you buy it in the first place.......

anyhow, the above isnt really helpful, but you should be able to get a belt from an industrial belt and bearing supplier in your area, almost every large city has one.

ah well so speaks the usual keyboard mechanics that dont really read the title or the content of posts.
quick rules of thumb:
1) if you dont have a serpentine belt why did you bother reading or commenting?
2)the post was for help to those who it concerned, not for people with nothing better to do than slate a persons choice of 'toys or trinkets' on their own personal vehicle
3)whats wrong with carrying a spare fanbelt/basic spares in your vehicle just in case? not doing so on a vehicle over 40 years old is just 'KIN STUPID!
4) a sense of humour isnt essential when driving a vw of any age, but having one to cope with the anal retentive who 'always' know better, but very rarely do, is a distinct advantage! :D

if a post helps one person on here save money or be able to fix their ride, surely that is the point of a technical section?
persons that need to discuss the do's and don'ts of how the world would be a better place if everything was done their way, really need to lighten up! :)

as the only justifiable post on this thread was a relevant question it deserves an answer. the belt didnt need replacing so i cannot say how long it will indeed last. just wanted to have a spare just in case ;)

Forgive my ignorance, but what the hell can a serpentine belt possible be good for in an aircooled VW???

Serpentine belts only came into existence as far as I know because cars got so many pulleys (alternator, water pump, air con, power steering, vac pump on diesels, emissions pump on some wierd engines in the 80s, etc) that a normal V belt could not turn them all since the bending radii needed for a compact installation would be too great for it to have a decent service life.

But why is it useful in an aircooled engine, which only has two pulleys?

Unless you are running a supercharger? (In which case I definitely would not trust anything made by Scat anywhere near it).

The serpentine pulleys are fixed diamter : unlike the VW issue one which floats a little depending on its adjustment via the shims etc..

With the serpentine the ratio of turns of the cooling fan to crank is fixed and constant : so cooling is fixed at a constant rate.

Adjustment is via a screw thread arrangment on the jocky wheel - assuming its not rusted-up and seized. ;)

They may be a little gadgety : they do however provide a certain amount of technical 'Win'.!

little update! and to confirm the reason for thread :) belt shredded at just over 1500 miles at 11.45pm if i hadnt a spare i would have been screwed! :)

prior preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance!!! :)

or put another way, dear 'keyboard mechanics' if your mummy and daddy had been prepared 9 months before you were born and had that condom ready, we wouldnt have to read your posts now :D :D :D

I've never had a serpentine belt break, in fact the serpentine belt in my Merc 500E is factory original and has been in place for 285,000+ mls. I check all the belts regularly and the only reason that I have ever had a failure was with a cheap accessory shop V belt that delaminated. All my belts since on the custom installations have been industrial quality. I haven't carried a spare fan belt for years as a result (for the same reason I don't carry a spare spark plug, carburettor, gearbox etc).

I can only think that your belt failure was as a result of poor quality materials or poor quality installation. I try to ensure my stuff doesn't fall into either category.

After reading Mucky's post about serpentine belts I bought one of the CB Performance ones from Beetleragtop on here. Fitting was simple and its been running on there for about 1000 miles or so with no problems - yes it looks flash but that wasn't the reason I fitted it.... Don't have a spare belt for it for the same reason evilC points out. But, I am paranoid (I always carry a spare plug/plug lead/dizzy cap/rotor/clutch cable/ accel. cable/etc.) and travel a lot up and down to the SW of France so a spare would be welcome for the little space it takes up. 63ragtop - was the belt you got suitable for the CB Performance kit and if so, what's the part number? In the meantime I'll ask James if he can get the belts at his usual good prices... Cheers.
