Should open-wheel race cars have closed cockpits?

Due to the dramatic loss of Dan Weldon, and in the past, Felipe Massa's crash, do you think F1/ Indie cars should still have open cockpits? If they were closed, it would maximize the safety, and we may have not had these tragic accidents in the past.

IMO, I think no, simply because an open cockpit is one of the most defining features of an F1/ Indie car. Being able to see the the driver, seeing there helmet is something that adds to the purity of these sports.

Your thoughts? :)

I can't see, given the speeds that these guys are doing, that having a closed cockpit would make any difference.

If you just added a roof (not to blind anyone with science ) to an F1 car, it would need to be some sort of transparent lexan/polycarbonate/whatever fandago compound they invent next, which wouldn't really offer much, if anything, in the way of crash protection.

Improving the circuits, greater run off areas, 'plyable' fences etc would be the better way to improve safety.

Those FIA tests were done yonks ago, I think they had some canopies donated off F-16s as a comparison?

I don't think a canopy would have made much difference in the case of Dan Weldon. Massa's crash was a complete freak accident, although Henry Surtee's fatal crash is probably the best argument for a canopy however they seem to be going down the route of developing the wheel retainers although I'm not sure if these have yet filtered down from F1 to other open wheel classes.

That and we're all forgetting that sniffpetrol has destroyed any credibility that James Allen ever had

I think no.

Part of the attraction of racing is taking a risk. The more that risk is attenuated the more risks are taken.

Part of the attraction of watching racing is the knowledge of the risks involved. And the appreciation of the skills of those taking part.

If you want to remove all danger from motorsport, move to playstations.

Just my opinion. Glen.
