The new Star Trek

 

I thougHt Star Trek was dull and probably one of the most disappointing Star Trek movie I'd seen in ages. It was just lens flair after lens flair with the most rediculos plot that got worse and worse. The characters were clever but scotty was shite.

I liked Moon though.

 

I know Pandorum was important because of the groundbreaking special effects but the story and script were pretty forgettable.

So what do you rate?

Thats what i thought....was shit too, and an event horizon rip off in a few ways.

 

I'm on the search for a 'good' new sci-fi film. They really are few & far between.

Thinking Sucker Punch might be up there .... but Star Trek has been most enjoyable if not an original story.
Although I did think the Matrix owed much to Tron ... and Legacy is out soon

Enjoyed District 9.
Watched Inception last night too and was really impressed but that may just be an early reaction, be interesting to see if it stands the test of time.

Im still undecided, ill watch it a few times more, its one of those slow burners for me.

 

I´m not sure Star Wars/Trek really count. Thats "Space Adventure" IMHO. Sci Fi is about ideas, not necessarily rocket ships.

 

If I was being picky I'd say that anything regarding "Science" and "Fiction" would happily sit in the 'sci-fi' realm

For an old school one try THX1138, seventies 1984 style of film, havent seen it for years but think it was good, or could be big pile poop, will have to find it on amazon and re visit it.

Not sure if it's since the Matrix, but my vote goes to Gattaca. Genetic selection by discrimination against those with imperfect genes is the theme. It's a decent story, has a Frank Lloyd-Wright set and Citroen DSs.

 

Good film, unfortunately predates The Matrix by two years. So does Dark City, which I think is a fucking amazing film.

 

This thread proves that no matter how good a film is, someone will ALWAYS say it's shit on the internet.

Matrix 6 is by far the best.

Who'd of thought that angle in the storyline would come about, but since time travel the logistics of having Rod Hull play that character were simple.

 

What about Watchmen? Sure, it's not set in space*, and there's no aliens in it, but it does have a big blue bloke in it who can fanny about with things at a molecular level. Plus world peace - and if that's not fiction then I really don't know what is.












*Apart from the bit set in space, obviously.

 

Snedboy, are you saying that the sci-fi genre has taken a bit of a nosedive in the past ten years? If so I think you may be right.

 

The new BSG was incredible, but says more about today than the future IMHO.

 

not many film out there that are sci fi and good ,only one since matrix i can think of is serenity .

I found out about that recently. As a 12 year old Warhammer nerd and more recently, a Dawn of War fan, I think this could be a cult hit int he same way that the Left for Dead movie could work.

I enjoyed The Island, not that 'spacey' but set in the future. Great effects, a real blockbuster movie that seemed to slip under most peoples radar.

There's been a drought of sci-fi for a couple of years (excl District 9) but I read that there's a slew of sci-fi movies due out in the next year.

I guess everybody's about fed up with wizards, pirates and vampires!!

Best (non-sci-fi) movie I've seen recently is Law Abiding Citizen.

 

Wish someone would film some Iain M. Banks books.

 

District 9 - if only because it came from a different angle. Not everything went the way you thought it would

 

There seems to be more work doen in Hollywood on sci-fi series's recently. Terminator - Sarah Connor Chronicles was great but tragically cancelled and Fringe is great and getting better.
The writers strike had a huge effect on some productions.

And loved summer glau!
