white smoke means water, probably just condensation from our 'orrible climate.

 

White smoke, with a blue'ish tinge, means oil burning, but that can often be confused with water vapour that all cars produce when cold. Smoke smells distinctive, water vapour just smells of general exhaust fumes.

It could be a blown head gasket - check the radiator??

I would be concerned if there was a goodly amount of condensation in the pipework as it will with the acidic soot be eating into the exhaust metal. If its a zoom tube and you don't use it as a daily what about putting a bung in the end so that it doesn't suck in moist atmospheric air. It will then suck in the oily/petrol fumes from the cylinder that will help protect the metal. Just a thought

It can also be brake fluid leaking through a servo, but I guess that is pretty unlikely on an air-cooled vw (do any of the air-cooled veedubs have a brake servo?)....
