Wrong carb (30 pict 3) on my 1974 1200 beetle?

Hi all,

I'd been trying to get my 74 1200 bug to start with the solex (VW branded with 'Made in Germany' stamped on it) carb which came with the car (a 30 pict-3) with no luck.

I had a spare old Vw branded Solex 28 pict 1 from another 1200 beetle which when I put it on fired up straight away, leading me to think the 30 pict-3 isn't the right carb for the job.

The 28 pict 1 I have doesn't have the 2 electrical (spade type) connections on it so I would tape up the 2nd connection (one goes to the left of the car, one goes to the right) to run it like this. I'm not really sure what the electrical connection on the left really does anyway?!

My question is because I haven't seen anything definitely confirming this:

1200 engines - 28 pict or 28 pict 1 carbs seem right
1300 - 30 pict 1 or 2
1500 - 30 pict 1 or 2 or 31 pict

so what does the 30 pict 3 carb I've got come from originally?

I've found a good source that can re-condition my carb for ÂŁ150+VAT and having now rejected 2x 'new' carbs for crap build quality I want to make sure I'm refurbing the right carb for my car!

Cheers guys

The 30 carb should work with the engine but won't be jetted correctly.
It might be something simple like the cut off value is jammed shut (it's below the throttle arm and has a wire connected to it.
You can check it works by touching a live 12v wire to it and listen for the clunk.
Sounds like your pict 28 does not have a cutoff value hence the extra wire.

30 PICT-3 has been used on the VW1200 since August 1970.
Generally the 12v versions for 1200 were '113 129 029' followed by a letter. If this is the part number it will be jetted correctly.

If it is any other number it could be a 1300 version
30 PICT-3 was also used on the VW1300 from August 1970.

28 PICT-1 was used on the VW1200 from August 1964 to Nov 1965

The wire should have 3 spade connections as follows on the 30 PICT-3:
Position 15 on ignition coil, to cut-off valve on carburettor(left-side) and then to choke on right-side of carb.
If you then turn the ignition on without the engine running, when you pull the spade off the cut-off valve you should hear it click.

I got a 30 pict 3 on my '70's 1200 Bug. This runs fine except the worn mixture screw, but after research & reading through many threads on here and the Samba.com, it would seem that a slightly larger main jet would go amiss. I tried a 120 main jet - works well. The car is much better. If you look through the "Hot 1200" thread on here you'll get loads of extra help too. Alternatively you could try and get an old Weber W-222051 carb. This will also run on the 1200!!

Thanks Dazza. Maybe it's the jets that are shafted on mine. We took each of them out and blew down them but to the naked eye they looked fine. I've not had this problem before with a carb!

Does anyone know how to measure jets to see what I've got as there's no reason why I've actually got the right jets in the carb?

I'll have a look for one of those weber carbs you mention but would rather stick with a stock solex if possible?

Thanks all
