Author recommendations to a Jack Reacher / Lee Child fan?

I've never been a big reader - I never had the patience to get into a good book.

In my 20's I enjoyed the Sci-Fi books from Ben Bova, but hadn't 'read' properly for 15 years until I stumbled across Lee Child's Jack Reacher series.

16, 500+ page novels in 4 months later and I'm craving for something else to read.

However, I'm a VERY, VERY, VERY fussy reader. Not because I have some elevated intellect that requires nothing but the most exquisite and polished writing, quite the opposite in fact.

I need books to be utterly and totally gripping within 5 pages or I get board, impatient and give up.

Any book I find enjoyable, my near professional reader level wife says that it was indeed a hugely gripping, un-putdownable, edge of your seat, breath taking read. If it's less than that, I'm not interested.

I can't for example read any Stephen King. I 'm in no way doubting the magnificence of his stories or writing, but simply don't have the patience to tolerate his endless 'off on a seemingly pointless tangent' style. In Christine for example, right in the middle of the chase where Christine is about to run down Moochie Welch, he goes off on a 16 page rampage about an industrial estate he's driving past.... and? so what? that adds to the story how? can we get back to chasing Moochie Welch please?

I totally understand that the fault is with me, not with the books that bore me, but I am what I am and need fast paced thrillers that grip from the outset and don't deviate from the thrill, not even for one page.

I enjoyed Michael Chrichton's Airframe for example, or 'some' of the John Grisham.

I find Bill Bryson utterly tedious, despite wanting to like them.

So, on the basis that I have the reader IQ similar to that of a 6 year old watching the A-Team or Dukes of Hazzard, desperate for the next 'thrill' or moment of suspense, what authors or book series would people recommend that are massively gripping in the 'gonna be late for work, been up all night' reading level?

Sci-fi possible, court room, FBI/CIA, will they catch him or won't they are the type of books I enjoy.

Casual, romantic, durge, human struggle, misery, suffering type of stuff leaves me cold.

Any recommendations?

But the Jack Reacher series was absolutely EXACTLY what I like and want. Simple, fast paced and gripping from start to finish. For the simple mind.

I enjoyed one Jack Reacher and bought another, finding it exactly like the first one, then I had another couple bought me for chrimbo. I managed one of them but by that point I knew what was going to happen before it happened and couldn't face the other.

Have you considered reading chapter 1 from one Jack Reacher book, chapter 2 from another, and chapter 3 from another, etc? That would probably work, and you could keep going indefinitely. In fact that's probably how the author writes them.
I take it you've read the Dan Brown books? I seem to recall they were similar in a 'gripping by page 5' way. Or the Dragon Tattoo books? I bet they'd fit your bill. They're not all action, cars exploding, fight scenes by page 15 but they're quite gripping.
What about Diane Capri's Deep Cover Jack series?
:)

David Baldacci's Will Robbie series :).
This.

Old school, Robert Ludlum. The original Bourne books are ace, probably better than Child in every way.

I finished the last Lee Child one just before Christmas, pretty poor I thought. Seems to be coming off the boil and running out of ideas (not that there was much idea in most of his books )

Thanks all.

I've not read any of those books so will give me something to look out for.

I've heard good things about Andy McNabb so might give them a go next.

I went to bed last night and in desperation 'almost' at random picked anything off the shelf from my wife's extensive collection and ended up with A.A.Gill which to be fair, I am thoroughly enjoying, despite going against everything I've said I like.

Thanks all.

Were any of you Reacher fans utterly and totally dismayed when Tom Cruise was cast as Reacher?

Can you think of anyone less suitable for the role?

I thought Daniel Craig (maybe) or Dolph Lundgren would've been far more suitable.

When your character is 6'5", blond, built like a tank and triple hard, Tom Cruise doesn't naturally spring to mind.

I agree, I thought it really needed a new star, one not already typecast in other roles. One that fits the Reacher spec.

But I enjoyed both films nonetheless.:D

You can get talking books from your local library in cd, mp3 and (at my local libraries) free download. I use them all the time on my daily 60+ mile commute. I find I listen to books I would never bother to read, plus it's free!

I like Michael Connelly, John Connolly, PeterJames, Andy McNab Nick Stone books - and for a bit of escapism the Peter Grant books by Ben Aaronovitch. I used to like Lee Child, but I kind of lost a bit of respect for him when he sold out and let Tom Cruise play Reacher; I mean the books are far fetched enough without that stretch of the imagination...

I've just started the very first Jack Reacher book. I'm a couple of chapters in and quite enjoying it so far.
