I've never been a big reader - I never had the patience to get into a good book.
In my 20's I enjoyed the Sci-Fi books from Ben Bova, but hadn't 'read' properly for 15 years until I stumbled across Lee Child's Jack Reacher series.
16, 500+ page novels in 4 months later and I'm craving for something else to read.
However, I'm a VERY, VERY, VERY fussy reader. Not because I have some elevated intellect that requires nothing but the most exquisite and polished writing, quite the opposite in fact.
I need books to be utterly and totally gripping within 5 pages or I get board, impatient and give up.
Any book I find enjoyable, my near professional reader level wife says that it was indeed a hugely gripping, un-putdownable, edge of your seat, breath taking read. If it's less than that, I'm not interested.
I can't for example read any Stephen King. I 'm in no way doubting the magnificence of his stories or writing, but simply don't have the patience to tolerate his endless 'off on a seemingly pointless tangent' style. In Christine for example, right in the middle of the chase where Christine is about to run down Moochie Welch, he goes off on a 16 page rampage about an industrial estate he's driving past.... and? so what? that adds to the story how? can we get back to chasing Moochie Welch please?
I totally understand that the fault is with me, not with the books that bore me, but I am what I am and need fast paced thrillers that grip from the outset and don't deviate from the thrill, not even for one page.
I enjoyed Michael Chrichton's Airframe for example, or 'some' of the John Grisham.
I find Bill Bryson utterly tedious, despite wanting to like them.
So, on the basis that I have the reader IQ similar to that of a 6 year old watching the A-Team or Dukes of Hazzard, desperate for the next 'thrill' or moment of suspense, what authors or book series would people recommend that are massively gripping in the 'gonna be late for work, been up all night' reading level?
Sci-fi possible, court room, FBI/CIA, will they catch him or won't they are the type of books I enjoy.
Casual, romantic, durge, human struggle, misery, suffering type of stuff leaves me cold.
Any recommendations?
But the Jack Reacher series was absolutely EXACTLY what I like and want. Simple, fast paced and gripping from start to finish. For the simple mind.
