Thanks I know the stroke is different I was wondering more about the case and barrel size , I guess I'll find out soon
Barrel size (holes in the case) are the same from 1200 to 1600 on the late cases, so shouldn't be an issue if the case is the only thing you're changing.
Replacement new cases are all the same part whatever (stock) engine size. https://www.vwheritage.com/043101025d-crankcase-1300cc-1600cc-vw-spare

Different engine capacities are changed by stroke (1200 up to 1300) and from 1300 to 1641 by piston diameter, the cylinders getting thinner as capacity increases. Above 1641 you need to have the case machined out to take larger diameter cyls.

There was a 4 year period that VW used the same case for all their engines so the barrel hole was all the same diameter. Either side of this 4 year period the 1200 case had a smaller hole for the 1200 barrels.
However, if your case is defo a 1300 then so long as a 40hp 1200 crank it'll fit the case but unless you buy the 4 year period barrels you'll have to use 1300-1600 barrels to fit the 1300 case.
It's not at all confusing is it :p

yes you can fit a 1200cc crank in a 1.3-1600 case...... BUT....

The 1200 crank rod journals are wider so you need to use the 1200 conrods.....
1200 con roads wont accept the larger wrist pins used by 13-1600 pistons...so you are stuck with 1200 specific style pistons...
as others have said, the whole combination adds up to a much shorter stroke....so tinware will also need tweaking and cylinder head studs will be too long.......it does open a tin of worms.... and gets expensive, 1200 motors are expensive to build due to unique parts etc...
